Dato che più volte vi abbiamo fatto accenno, mi sono messo a cercare qualcosa in più sul brevetto Brompton.
Ho trovato varie versioni dello stesso brevetto. Nato come brevetto inglese numero GB1580048 e depositato il 7 maggio 1976, in una versione rivista è stato poi esteso in Europa (EP0026800, nato il 3 ottobre 1979 e pubblicato nella sua versione finale il 30 maggio 1984, con validità per Germania, Francia, Italia ed Olanda). Si trovano poi estensioni negli Stati Uniti (US4182522) ed in Giappone (JP1192234).

E di seguito i "claims", ovvero cosa veniva rivendicato (e quindi protetto) dal brevetto:
1 . A folding bicycle comprising a foldable main frame member (11) having a front frame (11a) carrying a steerable front wheel assembly (1, 3) and a rear wheel assembly including a rear wheel (21) characterised in that there is provided pivot means interconnecting said main frame member and said rear wheel assembly whereby said rear wheel assembly can pivot relative to said main frame member in the plane of said rear wheel into a folded position in which the axle of said rear wheel is located beneath said main frame member, the position of said pivot means being such that the rear wheel moves to a position when folded which lies substantially between the positions occupied by the front and rear wheels when the bicycle is unfolded; and said main frame assembly being provided with pivot means whereby said front wheel assembly may be moved on folding into a position in which said front wheel lies substantially alongside said rear wheel when the said rear wheel assembly is in its folded condition.
2. A folding bicycle as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that it includes a strut carried by and slidable relative to said main frame member into a raised position and a lowered position and supporting a saddle; said strut, when in its lowered position, and when said rear frame assembly is in its folded position, lying in the path of said rear wheel assembly to prevent the latter moving into its unfolded position.
3. A folding bicycle as claimed in claim 1, and further characterised in that there is provided a treadle mechanism supported by said main frame member, the axis of said treadle mechanism being so located with respect to the axis of said pivot means between said main frame member and said rear wheel assembly that in the folded condition the distance between the axis of said rear wheel and said treadle mechanism is less than when the bicycle is in its unfolded condition.
4. A folding bicycle as claimed in claim 1, and further characterised in a support member carried by said rear wheel assembly, said first pivot means being so located that when said bicycle is in its folded condition said support member acts as a base to support the folded bicycle unaided by other means, and when said bicycle is in its unfolded condition, said support member is substantially horizontal.
Ricordo che i brevetti hanno validità ventennale, scaduti i quali chiunque può utilizzarli.
Quello di cui mi sono stupito è di non aver trovato brevetti più recenti di proprietà Brompton. Nemmeno qualcosa che brevettasse non l'intera bici, oramai non più brevettabile, ma una delle tante piccole modifiche apportate nel corso degli anni.

Brompton wins 'Best Product' award at London Cycling Awards, London 09 May 2013

Brompton Bicycle ha celebrato ieri sera la vittoria del premio London Cycling Campaign’s award for ‘Best Product , come votato dai membri del pubblico. La cerimonia di premiazione, è stata ospitata da ITV Ned Boulting, ha avuto luogo nella cripta di St-Martin-in-the-Fields Church in Trafalgar Square.
Will Butler-Adams, amministratore delegato, ha partecipato all'evento e ricevendo il premio, ha detto:
"Questo premio è un grande riconoscimento del successo che abbiamo avuto per la produzione delle nostre biciclette pieghevoli a Londra per gli ultimi 25 anni. Un Premio come questo significa molto per tutta l'azienda, il manufatto è un settore difficile e ottenere questo riconoscimento è fantastico "

Quello di cui mi sono stupito è di non aver trovato brevetti più recenti di proprietà Brompton. Nemmeno qualcosa che brevettasse non l'intera bici, oramai non più brevettabile, ma una delle tante piccole modifiche apportate nel corso degli anni.
Le "piccole modifiche" seppur funzionali, probabilmente non sono abbastanza innovative da poter essere brevettate.
Oppure a volte si tenta di brevettare per poi vedersi stroncare la domanda in fase di esame.
Brompton è ormai un'azienda storica che vende un'icona di stile, più che un prodotto dotato di forti innovazioni: il suo punto forte è la piega, cosa che ne ha decretato lo stile unico (questo è il punto forte che li tutela); per il resto non è certo l'innovazione la sua sua forza.
Aziende come Tern o Dahon sono decisamente più orientate verso la ricerca di nuove soluzioni, ma qui subentra un altro ragionamento da fare: queste ultime devono innovare per rinnovarsi, Brompton invece lavora sul marketing per sopravvivere al futuro.
Deve cioè salvaguardare lo "stile Brompton" che non risiede nella tecnologia della bicicletta, ma semplicemente nelle sensazioni e nelle aspettative che comunica il marchio stesso: praticità, stile inglese, lusso, accessori raffinati in pelle, ecc....
